Sir, 

     Subject: Poor condition of roads and drains

     

     I would like to draw the attention of the authorities through the column of your daily, to the pitiable condition of roads in the city. Apart from the main thoroughfares, the condition of roads in the bylanes and the colonies on the suburbs of the city are very pathetics. It is quite common to find big potholes right in the middle of the road, which are in a state of disrepair. This makes it difficult to drive during the day. The absence of street lights makes these potholes a virtual death trap at night. There have been innumerable accidents in the recent past, some of them fatal. 

    The drainage system is even worse, as most of the drains are choked. This was exposed the other day, when the pre monsoon shower proved hollow the claim of the civic authorities, of being prepared for the monsoon. In this mild shower, most of the localities, including the posh markets were flooded with water. The unauthorised encroachment of land by vendors and influential people, have played havoc with the drainage system of the city. One shudders to think, what could happen with the advent of monsoon beginning early next month. 

     

    There is however still time to set things right, before it is too late. The road repairs and the cleaning of the drains should be taken up concurrently, without any delay. Wherever required, the encroachment of public land that is impairing drainage, should be immediately demolished. The encroachment of land should also be made a cognizable offence under law, with strict penalties to discourage people from it. This would not only make the city roads wide and decongest the traffic, but would also make the city clean and beautiful. 

    I would therefore request the civic authorities, through your column to kindly take heed of this serious civic problem that is playing havoc with the life and property of the common man.
